La Provence est habité dès le Paléolithique inférieur. Il en reste beaucoup de traces des colonisations, notamment des Grecs et des Romains et le Provence devient la première province hors d'Italie. Le nom Provence vient des Romains : Provincia romana.

The Provence was inhabited since Paleolithic times and has known many colonisations since, of which Greek and Roman times were the most important. It became the first Roman province outside of Italy: Provincia romana, hence its name.
